Summary

"How should we interpret the symbolism of the two staffs—Favor and Union—in Zechariah 11? How did first-century Jews Zechariah 12-14, and how do Christians understand their fulfillment? In today's episode, Emma Dotter and Watermark member, Seth Reich answer these questions and explore how Jesus fulfills the prophecies that are seen in Zechariah 11-14. Today, we are reading Zechariah 11 through 14, and I am in the podcast studio, not with today's Devo

writers, but one of our Devo writers from this week, Seth Reich.

0:20.9

Good morning. Seth, it's so good to have you here. Yes. How long have you been at Watermark? Where are you plugged in? Where do you serve? So I've been here for about 10 years. You can find me serving at the kids ministry. We wear the yellow shirt. Yes. I'm a greeter, but I'm most often in the classrooms with the little kids. Fun.

Also, as you said, I do the Join the Journey writing, I do editing, and I lead my community group. I love it. And, hey, if you're interested in being an editor with Join the Journey, we would love for you to apply. So we'll put that link in the episode description. But, Seth, we've got a lot to cover today. So I'm going to have us jump in if that's cool with you.

Sounds great.

0:55.1

Okay.

Why don't you start?

We've been in Zechariah for a couple days now, but give us some context. What's going on here? Yeah, there's a lot to unpack here. And so some of the context that I think is really important is Zachariah himself. Zachariah's name in Hebrew is Zakhar. Yeah, I don't actually speak Hebrew,

1:13.2

so that may be incorrect pronunciation. Well, we'll go with it. Zachar essentially means Yahweh remembers.

1:19.8

But this isn't like, oh, I remember where I put my keys yesterday. In Hebrew, Zachar, Yahweh remembers,

1:26.9

implies that God remembers and is taking action.

1:30.5

So I think that's important when we're looking at this book to just have that context.

1:35.1

Now, in the timeline, we've been reading Zachariah a couple days, and at the beginning of the book,

1:40.7

we know that Zachariah occurs after the Babylonian exile when the temple

1:46.3

is being rebuilt. In Zachariah 1, it says the second year of Darius's reign, which is about

1:51.4

520 BC. But here in the second half of the book, basically nine onwards, it's often dated later by most

1:59.8

scholars. So around 470, 480 BC after the temple was

2:05.4

rebuilt. So today we're specifically looking at 11 through 14. I want to hone in really on this

2:11.0

section of the book because a lot of scholars group 9 through 14 together. So they'd say, hey, in chapter 9, starting in verse 1 through
