Today, we're reading Jeremiah 31 through 33, and I want us to focus on one specific topic for this episode, which can be summed up in a question.

0:19.3

What is the new covenant covenant and how is it different

0:22.4

from the old covenant? I want you to think, have you ever ignored an Apple software update for a little

0:29.7

too long? Like your phone keeps bugging you, update available, and you're like, remind me later,

0:34.6

and it's like update overnight, and you're like, no, for the hundredth time. But eventually what happens is your phone gets so glitchy or outdated that you can't

0:43.3

even use certain apps anymore. But when you finally give in an update, your phone's smoother,

0:49.3

faster, and just works better. That doesn't mean your phone was bad before or that the last system was entirely

0:56.1

useless. It just means that something better has come along that fixes what wasn't working

1:01.8

and brings out what the phone was really meant to do. And that's kind of what's happening in

1:07.8

Jeremiah 31 through 33. God isn't throwing away his promises or

1:12.1

deleting the past. He's showing us his plan to, quote-unquote, update the covenant. The old covenant

1:18.7

wasn't insufficient because God messed up. It was insufficient because people couldn't keep it.

1:24.3

So he introduces us to something better, the new covenant. Same God, same people,

1:30.4

but now the system works. Not because we figured it out or we fixed it ourselves, but because

1:36.3

Jesus fulfilled it for us. The new covenant is the update humanity needed and one that finally

1:43.0

gets to the heart. So today, we're in Jeremiah

1:46.7

chapters 31 through 33. And these chapters are full of hope, especially in the middle of a book

1:52.5

that, let's be honest, has been pretty heavy. But in the middle of warnings, judgment and exile,

1:57.4

we get one of the most important promises in the entire Bible, the new covenant.
