Today we are studying Titus 3 and as always you can follow along with the Behold Studies in the Daily Grace Coast shop or with a reading plan linked in the show notes.

Yesterday in Titus 2, Paul describes how people at each

age and stage of life can glorify God, but Paul didn't deliver these instructions

without anchoring his instructions in the gospel, reminding Titus that these good works are only possible because of the grace that we have received in Jesus.

Today, Paul will continue his instructions for the Creighton churches and we will see the same pattern.

Paul will deliver instructions and again anchor his instructions in the truth of the gospel. Remember, sound doctrine and good works go hand in hand.

Just in case we are tempted to think that we achieve good works on our own,

Paul turns our attention to the why behind good works.

Anything good in us is Christ. We were once dead in our sin but we have been made

alive in Jesus. Our good works flow out of the good news.

First, Paul calls Titus to remind the Christians on Crete to submit to rulers and authorities, to obey, and to be ready for every good work.

Despite the spiritual darkness of the island of Crete, despite the wayward values of their culture, Paul calls the church to God and therefore we can submit to our

authorities knowing that their leadership is in God's good and capable hands.

Submission to authority is less about trusting the leadership than it is about trusting in God.

Paul calls believers to slander no one, to avoid fighting, to be kind, and to always show gentleness to all the people.

Slander and fighting are the exact opposites of kindness and gentleness.
