Some crimes are so heartbreaking or shocking that they change laws, change society, or even

earn the label crime of the century.

But the stories that made headlines and decades passed aren't necessarily remembered today.

I remember Hunt, a journalist and author, and in each episode of this show, I'll examine

a case that's maybe lesser known today, but was huge when it happened.

This is crimes of the centuries.

Sven's Seffstrom sounded like he was chatting with an old buddy as he wondered aloud,

and then he should finally kick his smoking habit.

Sven was a mid-a-group of six people who had only met a few days earlier, but who now

found themselves talking about all sorts of matters, both meaningful and trivial.

They talked about the meaning of life, the role of prisoners in society, whether criminals

were born or made, and after Sven complained about how dank and unpleasant the room around

them had become after hours of cigarettes, they talked about smoking.

One of the others in the group told Sven he could quit smoking whenever he wanted.

Sven didn't seem satisfied with that response.

If it were so simple, he said, everyone would just up and quit.

The reply came quickly.

Everyone, I'm talking about you, aren't I?

To police officers that Eve's dropping on the conversation, the back and forth seemed

like two old friends taking jabs at each other.

But the person answering Sven was no friend of his.

It was, in fact, one of his captors.
