Summary

In light of the cross, do we really want burning coals to fall on our enemies' heads? Today, Seth Master talks through Psalm 140 and how we think about justice and hope in light of the cross. Through four movements of the psalm, David shows the truth that despite evil and how it affects him, he expresses confidence in God's justice. Because of our sin, we were all enemies of God. The cross has made a way for those who have been made righteous in Christ to dwell in the presence of God.

But our question today, as we look at

0:39.3

Psalm 140, is this. In light of the cross, do we really want burning coals to fall on our

0:45.6

enemy's heads? Now, I think to get in the right mindset as we look to answer this, we're going to have to

0:49.9

ask ourselves and make this question more personal. Have we ever been wronged? Have we ever been

0:56.2

hurt by the hand of another? Have we been threatened? Or are we currently in a season of hardship

1:01.0

because of an injustice or loss or physical danger due to another's sin or brokenness?

1:06.8

Now the cross, Jesus' sacrifice, does not change the need or desire for justice,

1:11.6

but it does change how justice is administered.

1:15.3

This is important to consider and unpack.

1:18.2

And we want to do this Psalm justice, and we're going to have to dive deep to do so.

1:22.1

But as we come back up, we're going to answer this.

1:25.0

And 140 can be broken down into four movements. Movement one in

1:30.3

verses 1 through 5, we're going to see the invocation and complaints of David. In movement 2,

1:36.8

in verses 6 through 7, we're going to see the expression of trust. In movement 3, the petition

1:42.5

in verses 8 through 11, and in movement 4, the expression of trust and praise, in verses 12 to 13.

1:50.2

Now, the context for Psalm 140 belongs to a collection of eight Psalms at the end of Book 5, all of which are attributed to David and connected in some way.
