Today we start the book of Lamentations.

Now admittedly, Lamentations, by nature of its name, doesn't seem very uplifting.

But even though there are some hard truths and realities found in this book, there is

also great hope and the reminder that God is faithful.

Today we take a look at chapters one through three, but first let's establish some context.

Most scholars believe that Jeremiah authored Lamentations, though the book itself doesn't

tell us who authored it, the writing style, emotion, and fact that Jeremiah was a witness

to the destruction of Jerusalem led to this majority opinion.

Lamentations was written shortly after Jerusalem's fall to Babylon in 586 BC, and likely

before Jeremiah was taken to Egypt.

Jeremiah saw firsthand what Babylon's siege and violence did to the people and the city.

His poetic language is both descriptive and heartbreaking.
