It is day two in the Book of Judges, and as you read, I'm sure you noticed we covered a lot of verses and events in these three chapters.

Today, we take a look at Debra's time as a judge and then begin the narrative of Gideon's leadership as a judge.

Like yesterday, some of the events will seem like something found in a movie, but what we want to see clearly is that God chooses to use unlikely people to accomplish His purposes.

God controls all aspects of His creation, and God is the one who brings the victory for His people.

So, with those three themes guiding our time today, let's take a look at Judges 4-6.

In verse 1 of chapter 4, we read a very familiar phrase.

The Israelites again did what was evil in the side of the Lord.

The cycle with Israel's disobedience begins again, and we read that they were oppressed for 20 years by King Jabbin of Canaan.

The commander of King Jabbin's army was a man named Cicera, who led the oppression with 900 iron chariots.

During this time, there was a prophetess named Debra from the tribe of Ephraim, who settled the disputes of the Israelites.

God used Debra to call out Barak to lead an army to defeat King Jabbin and the Canaanites.

Barak says he won't go unless Debra comes with him, and she agrees, but not without telling him that a woman would receive the honor for Cicera's defeat.

Now, logically, when we read that, we think that Debra will be the one to gain the honor, but God had another plan.

During the battle, it was the Lord who threw Cicera's army into a panic, and they were defeated by Barak and the Israelites, but we read that Cicera got away.

When Cicera came to the tent of JL, he did so very methodically.

During this period, women had separate tents from their husbands, and they were typically set up in a different area.

Cicera likely went to the women's tents, knowing that his chances of being found there were smaller.
