Jeremiah as we take a look at chapters 41 through 44. I'll include chapter 45 with tomorrow's reading. These chapters

today are filled with both historical narrative and prophecy. We will learn more about the people

left behind in Judah after Babylon conquered them. And Jeremiah will continue to share the word of the Lord,

even though the familiar pattern of disobedience will be prevalent among the exiles.

Today's chapters will remind us the importance of learning from discipline and being obedient

to the Lord's commands. We begin with chapter 41.

The last time we were in Jeremiah, Jerusalem had been destroyed.

Many people killed, captives taken to Babylon, and a small group of the poorest people were left in the land.

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon appointed Gethalaya as governor over those remaining.

Getalaya had a good heart, and he made good decisions for the small remnant left in Judah.

He helped bring order and peace to a situation filled with confusion and anguish.

But what Chapter 41 quickly shows us is the chaos

surrounding this new regime. Even though Babylon now occupied the land, various people sought to take

control of the people that remained. It is long before a man named Ishmael kills the appointed governor, Getaliah, his officials, and numerous people in the town of Mizpa.

This shouldn't have come as a surprise because Getalaya had been warned of this plot back in Chapter 40 by Johanin.

Ishmael had been contracted by the king of the Ammonites to kill Getaliah. But he goes even further and kills numerous people, including a group of 80 men

who were on their way to the ruined temple in Jerusalem to mourn and worship the Lord.
