Back to our regular Wednesday weekly slot, we, The ChickPeeps, find ourselves wildly keen to discuss the past year in vegan news - the updates, controversies, triumphs and progress, and who better to mull that over than with the exceptionally erudite animal rights’ activist, Earthling Ed. A much loved returning guest from season 1, Ed is vegan educator, public speaker and co-founder of Surge and The Official Animal Rights March. The past year has seen him spreading the vegan message to Ivy League students across America and opening his own non-profit vegan diner, and this week he takes time to pause and reflect on where the vegan movement is in the public consciousness now.

Also on this episode...

  • Is veganism winning?
  • What the Ivy League students have to say about veganism.
  • Is there space for joy in activism and how do we balance our personal lives with activism?
  • Should we all be full time activists?
  • How much is the government helping/hindering the animal rights movement?
  • Robbie and Ed go head to head in a battle for the title of nerdiest vegan as they share who reads the most science and medical journals.
  • Ed explains his reasoning for skulking around farmers chat rooms under the alias Farmer Ed (joke).
  • Ed has a surprising suggestion for the person he’d most like to see go vegan…

Welcome to episode one of the chickpeep season two, your friendly vegan weekly

0:24.9

podcast. I'm your host, Evie Lynch, and yes, technically this is our second episode, but now we're

0:30.7

back to Wednesday release dates and are back to our normal format of having a guest on every

0:35.1

week. So this is the official episode one of

0:38.2

season two. Don't question my podcast logic. It is what it is. So I thought we'd do an overview

0:44.7

of what's gone on over the past year. And in order to discuss the vegan scene, I thought

0:49.7

who better to have on than Earthling Ed, aka Ed Winters. He was on season one. He's an incredible

0:54.9

activist. He devotes his whole time, his whole life to helping spread the vegan message.

1:01.0

A little bit more about Ed's work, if you don't know him. He is a vegan educator, public speaker,

1:05.4

and content creator based in London. He's the co-founder and co-director of Surge, an animal rights

1:09.7

organization determined to create a world where compassion towards all non-human animals is the norm.

1:14.5

He also founded the official Animal Rights March and he has spoken at over a third of UK universities and six Ivy League colleges, including as a guest lecturer at Harvard University in April 2019.

1:25.8

He's given speeches across the world and he did two TED Talks

this year. So Ed has been super busy in the time that we have not been podcasting since we spoke to him.

1:34.3

Oh, he also opened Unity Diner in October 2018, a non-profit vegan diner where all the profits

go back into helping animals. And he just expanded his diner. I was at the launch last week. It's very exciting. And he has a podcast called The Disclosure Podcast. So I am going to call it. Ed is the authority on veganism. He knows what's up and he's going to tell us about it in this interview. So I hope you enjoy this catch-up chat with Earthling Ed. Okay, Chick-Peeps. I am now here with several people. It's a very full

2:02.8

room right now because we've got Earthling Ed back on the podcast. It's been a year since we've been
