Summary

The dark web is but a fraction of the internet. But illegal activity there is now increasing coming to light. Threatening savings. Damaging peace of mind. In this episode, we’ll meet the detective who fights crime on the dark side, and find out how he went from online to real life to nab a credit card fraudster.

0:09.2	This marked a new era in financial fraud.
0:12.2	As the landscape of fraud changed, we saw so much was going to the dark web and we saw
0:19.4	Bitcoin machines popping up around the city.
0:22.4	That's Retired Deputy Inspector Christopher Flanagan, who recently left the job.
0:27.9	Before he retired, he was in charge of NYPD's Financial Crimes Task Force.
0:33.6	The Financial Crimes Task Force investigates crimes like identity theft and bank fraud.
0:39.4	About seven years ago, Flanagan saw an uptick in crimes brought on by the handshake between
0:45.0	two technologies, Bitcoin and the dark web.
0:49.4	Suddenly, scams that had been taking place locally are crossing state and international
0:54.8	borders.
0:55.8	Victims can be from Iowa or even England, and then their accords or their bank accounts
1:02.7	are being exploited by a criminal in New York, but maybe being used in New Jersey and then
1:08.4	tying all that together and trying to get a prosecution in one borough is sometimes
1:13.4	a challenge for us.
1:14.8	In the financial fraud and cybercrime world, I feel like the changes happen at a much
1:20.0	more rapid pace, like crime that we see in the beginning of the year as a epidemic could
1:27.8	be somewhat eliminated by the end of the year by a technological response to that crime.
1:33.9	And then criminals will find a new exploit and then that will be the hot topic and trying
1:39.2	to keep pace with what's coming next is difficult.
