Summary

King John II of France is missing from the pages of history. There are no movies, no books, hardly a Wikipedia page. But, after Jenks dug in to the mystery of this seemingly forgotten king, a whole medieval world came to life. As it turns out, John II, perhaps better known as John the Good, sailed to England to turn himself in as a prisoner of war, abandoning his stunned French subjects to fend for themselves through the Dark Ages. Is he the worst king in history? Or, has he been unfairly lost to the annals of time? What Really Happened? In recent years, the world has been quite enchanted by royal weddings. An estimated 3.5 billion

0:38.3

people watched Prince William and Kate tie the knot. About 2 billion watched Prince Harry and

0:43.9

Meghan Markle. Nothing like a royal wedding. Meanwhile, here in the United States, we have a

0:50.3

president with historically low approval ratings. And when he tries holding hands with his wife,

0:56.7

she slaps that hand away. Combining these two factors are interest in royals during a time of a

1:03.7

statistically speaking dislike president got me thinking. It brought me to a time about two and a

half years ago. When I stumbled upon a king, I was reading online about King John of England. While

1:17.1

both despotic and evil, he also signed the Magna Carta. There are books, films, and exhibitions

documenting his reign. But I started finding cracks in his story which made no sense given he's

1:30.4

so well documented. I pursued a bit more online and realized I'd hit the wrong hyperlink and had

1:36.9

been attempting to read up on another king, King John II of France. I opted to continue searching for

1:45.3

more detail on John II of France, who also goes by King John the Good. A nickname for him I'll be

1:51.7

using throughout this episode. But I really couldn't find much on the good. While there are TV

1:57.3

shows on the royals, documentaries on princesses, textbooks and academic papers on kings and queens

from around the world and throughout time, for John II aka The Good, there seemed to be a hardly

2:10.0

sourced Wikipedia page. And I'm not talking about the king of a relatively small country.

2:16.4

I'm talking about a king of France, a king who ruled during the Hundred Years War,

2:21.6

one of the longest and most famous wars between two of the most well documented and powerful nations
