We return to Second Samuel today and chat through the events of chapters 16 through 18.

When we were last in Second Samuel, David had fled Jerusalem and Absalom had taken over the throne.

As we study today, we don't want to forget that God's covenant promises are still at work.

Though he will not speak directly in today's chapters, he will still be very much at work and faithfully keeping the covenant.

Some of David's actions in these chapters will also foreshadow Christ and how he perfectly reigns and fulfills the covenant promises.

In the last verse of Second Samuel 15, we read that David sent his personal advisor, Hushai, back into Jerusalem as a spy.

Hushai plays an important role in Absalom's downfall.

But before we learn more about that, we trace David's travels to the Jordan River.

For context, David and his entourage descended 3500 feet from Jerusalem to the Jordan River.

That is the equivalent of a 900-story building, and they covered a distance of 21 miles.

In other words, it was an exhausting trip that was made rapidly.

But along the way, he met Zeba.

Zeba had been Saul's servant and the one who brought Saul's son, Muthybusheth, and David together.

Zeba oversaw all of Muthybusheth's fields outside Jerusalem.

He blessed David and his entourage with provisions.

But he also told David that Muthybusheth had remained in Jerusalem because he was loyal to Absalom.

Muthybusheth will share a different story in chapter 19.
