| 0:34.0 | Back when we started First Samuel, we talked about some of the important contextual information for both of these books. |
| 0:42.0 | But if you're like me, our refresher is always in order. |
| 0:46.0 | So, very quickly, we want to remember that first and second Samuel are actually one book in the Hebrew Bible. |
| 0:54.0 | It wasn't until the Bible was translated into Greek that it was split into two books. |
| 1:00.0 | Many scholars believe the prophet Samuel authored portions of First Samuel, but the authorship of the rest of the two books is unknown. |
| 1:10.0 | First Samuel focused on the lives of Samuel and Saul while introducing us to David. |
| 1:17.0 | And now, Second Samuel will predominantly focus on the life and reign of King David. |
| 1:24.0 | While we traced the theme of kingship through First Samuel, we will now trace the theme of covenant in Second Samuel, as we see the eternal implications of the monarchy. |
| 1:38.0 | Second Samuel will still show us that David is a man after God's heart. |
| 1:44.0 | But we will also see him fail many times. |
| 1:48.0 | His failure will remind us of our need for a perfect king, and how beautifully God keeps his covenants, even when we mess up. |
| 1:58.0 | So, keep all of that in mind as we walk through Second Samuel, and let's get started with chapters 1 through 4 today. |
| 2:08.0 | There's a lot of bloodshed in these chapters, and a lot of blame. |
| 2:13.0 | But we want to keep in mind that each of these events displays David's innocence. |
| 2:19.0 | Through the author of this historical narrative, God specifically shows how David was innocent in any wrongdoing. |
| 2:27.0 | This innocence made him worthy of the kingship and the trust of the people. |
