Hi, welcome to the Standard of Truth podcast. I'm your host Garrett Dirkmont, and I'm joined by my

friend Jonathan Oliver, And this is part

two of our podcast covering the Doctrine and Covenants and its history. Thank you. So I wanted to

just kind of go back into the context of our last podcast. We left off talking about the 1835 edition

of the Doctrine and Covenants, and we also had started into the lectures on

faith. Yeah, and we decided we gave you that cliffhanger that had a story I wanted to tell you.

Speaking of the name of the Doctrine and Covenants, again, I always grew up just assuming

that the reason why the word doctrine was in the Doctrine and Covenants was, well, this is the stuff

you better follow, right? This is the Eternal word of God. This is the doctrine. They seem to be using the term

doctrine and covenants more in the 19th century version, and that is the word means teaching. That's

really what it means. And so it makes sense that they would include these lectures on faith, as Joseph said,

these lectures that were delivered before a theological class in this place, or essentially

an early Sunday school.

Sunday school before you have Sunday school.

And they clearly want to set it off from what are the revelations that come from God.

So whoever the author of the lectures on faith is, I mean, even if someone says they're

Joseph Smith, they want them to be separate. Now, I was going to tell you, I had a story on my
