in the convictions against Robert Pate and Christian Smith, today is the day where I sum up the case

in a tight package. One of the intents of this episode is to create an easily digestible summary

of the case and what went wrong. I'm doing this to both wrap up a year and a half

worth of work to our usual audience, but also to have a single place, a link to be shared

with anyone and everyone who has an interest in this case. If you're one of those people who

Start this journey with a brief summary. Again, if you've been listening to the season all along,

this will all be review, but I'm certain there's going to be a lot of new people listening,

so let me break this down. Around 9.45 pm on Sunday, September 17, in 2006,

multiple residents of the unincorporated community of Pinyon Pines, California,

called 911 and direct to the fire department. A two-story house on the north side of Alpine

Drive was on fire. The neighborhood was dark and quiet without streetlights. The roads are rough

and dirt, and there are only five houses on Alpine Drive, so vehicle traffic was non-existent.
