I'm Bob Brum.

After last week's look at Chad Bernbaum's police interviews and trial testimony about guns

that Robert Mayer may not have owned, we were left with a lot of questions.

In this episode, a lot of those questions will be answered by Robert himself.

In October of 2007, just over a year after the murders, a search warrant was executed and

Robert's house was searched by police.

Following that search, two guns were found.

A World War II era bolt action rifle and a 12 gauge shotgun.

After the search, Robert was detained at the Riverside County Sheriff's Department,

and what you're about to hear is Detective Gary LaClaire taking another stab at trying

to draw something out of Robert that could justify charges being filed.

As you know, that did not happen.

Shortly after this interview, the investigation was suspended and the case went cold for the

next seven years.

The reason that I'm playing this interview for you is because this is a very long interrogation

that takes place after a full year of investigating.

By this point, LaClaire has phone records, he's interviewed dozens of witnesses, he's conducted

the search, and now he knows the right questions to ask.

You'll be the judge in determining if LaClaire made the right decision after this interview

when he released Robert from custody and chose not to file charges.
