Welcome back to Blood Ties. I'm Geoffrey Wansaw, and I'm here today on my own because Molly is otherwise

engaged but I'm trying to tell one of the most extraordinary stories of Britain's most

criminal history in the last half century.

I started last week and here I am again this week trying my best to tell you what happened

in January 1977 had a place called Pottery Cottage in Derbyshire.

So this is part two of Pottery Cottage.

It's 6 o'clock in the afternoon of a bleak, blizzardy day

on the Derbyshire Peak District.

Pottery Cottage is an isolated house.

In fact, it's three houses altogether.

And an escaped convict,

Billy Hughes,

is holding Gillian Moran

around the neck with a knife to her throat when a husband Richard,

a sales director, returns from a meeting in Birmingham.

Gillian's mother, Amy, is with her in the kitchen,

but she is 67 and a little frail,

while Gillian's daughter Sarah and her father, Arthur,

are next door watching television.

Richard Moran doesn't know what to do.

But in the end, he acquiesces to the violent threat to his wife Gillian

and lies on the floor as Hughes instructs him to.
