There’s movement CALORIES and movement NUTRITION--once you understand the difference, you’ll never look at “exercise” the same way again. I’m joined by biomechanics and best-selling author Katy Bowman in this episode where we unpack our compartmentalized modern view of movement and explore how to take an old-fashioned approach to healthier bodies, better mobility, and less pain as we work around the homestead. Hey friends, welcome back to the old-fashioned on-purpose podcast.

0:04.0

So, one topic that keeps coming up for me as I dive deeper into old-fashioned ideas is the idea

0:11.7

of movements. And I'm guessing you've already heard more than once, probably pretty much everywhere

0:17.2

that we need to move our bodies more, right? You know, our modern world, we are set up to be more

0:21.9

sedentary, we're sitting in chairs, we're slimmed over our computers a lot, I mean, I'm totally

0:26.0

guilty of that. And so that's a common message. But one topic that I have become more and more

0:31.7

interested in over the last few years, especially as I was researching my own book and diving into

0:36.4

some research, was not just the idea of moving more, but how are we moving? And how can we make

0:42.3

little changes in our everyday movement, whether that's how we're sitting in our desk chairs,

0:46.9

or how we're doing our chores in the barnyard, to not only mimic what our ancestors may have done,

0:51.9

but also set us up for success and help us be healthier with better longevity. So, I have a really

0:58.6

awesome expert joining me today to speak to this topic. Katie Bowman is a biomechanist,

1:05.0

mechanist, or mechanist. How do I say that? I nailed it. Okay, I shouldn't have said yes myself.

1:09.7

All right, nailed it. And she's also the best biomec. Okay, perfect, perfect.

1:13.6

Yeah, biomec. She's the best-selling author of many books, but her latest is called

1:17.1

rethink your position. If you're watching a video today, I have it right here. You can see my

1:21.4

sticky notes on the cover. She is an acclaimed expert on the mechanics of the human body,

1:25.7

how to align it properly, to use it effectively, and address the stresses that repetitive use

1:31.4

can cause. She's been featured all over the national media in PR today, show New York Times.

1:36.0

She knows her stuff, and she also has a home-setting background, which is an icing on the cake. So

1:41.6

welcome, Katie. I'm so happy to have you with us today. Yeah, I'm excited for this conversation.

1:46.0

Thanks for having me. Yeah, so I really think this idea of not just moving more,
