A parent's worst nightmare.

That's a phrase that can be used to describe any number of circumstances.

Included in that list is the helpless feeling of knowing the police are questioning your

child and you can't be there to help them or guide them through the process.

Because of what I do for a living, my children have been taught from a very young age that

you never talk to the police without a lawyer present.

No exceptions, full stop, never.

Unfortunately, very few parents would even think to teach this valuable lesson to their

children.

I mean, after all, the police are the good guys.

And what are the chances that the situation will ever even come up?

But what if it does?

Would your son or daughter be prepared?

They be suspicious of a seemingly kind police officer who might offer them a candy bar,

feed them a meal, assure them that they're doing the right thing and that they can go

home just as soon as they sign a statement.

These are all tactics that are used by detectives every day in order to keep a juvenile witness

or suspect talking.

Our children are taught to respect adults, especially those in a position of authority.

Police officers know that and they use it to their advantage.
