in Zachariah, about true repentance. The people had been fasting as a sign of mourning and

repentance and they ask if they still need fast now that God plans to fulfill his promises.

However, God questions if the people have been fasting for

genuine reasons. If the people have been fasting as a way to demonstrate the

repentance, then they no longer need to fast. But if the people have been fasting for selfish reasons,

this shows that they don't have repented hearts.

God desires for his people to turn away from their sin

and be faithful to him.

He tells Sakurai to encourage the people of Israel's

faithfulness by calling them to extend justice and mercy to one another. A
