talk about chapters 19 through 21 in the book of

Matthew. In these chapters Jesus is traveling towards and arrives at Jerusalem

which we know will be the place where he will be crucified.

So what does Jesus choose to do with some of his last days before his death?

Let's look at today's text to see.

In chapters 19 and 20, Jesus is continuing his teaching

from chapter 18 about the upside down kingdom. These chapters are varied in their

setting and the people involved.

Jesus teaches on divorce, addresses children, tells parables,

confronts the rich young ruler, and addresses the disciples. And he even talks to James and John's mother. Although there's a lot

happening in these two chapters they are united in their message. The

kingdom of God is not what anyone thought it would be. It is not about

being revered, wealthy, or the appearance of righteousness. It is about serving,

being humble, and having a heart that is right before God.

Chapter 20 versus 26 and 27 sum up the message Jesus teaching in this way.

It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever

wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first

among you must be your slave.
