Welcome back to another episode of a year in the Bible with daily grace. This is Stephanie,

your host through the book of Leviticus. Today we are covering chapter 7 through 9.

Yesterday, we saw that chapter 6 ended with instructions specifically for the priests,

ensuring proper handling of the different offerings.

Chapter 7 continues this instruction. As you read through this chapter, you may have

noticed the word holy and the phrase laws of sacrifice jump out because of its frequency of use.

These laws can be seen as God's kindness because they were guidelines for the priests

in properly handling God's holy property. They were part of the process God said forth as he

was making a way for sinful humanity to dwell in his holy presence. In this chapter, the priests

are told how to deal with the priest's portions of the offerings. These varied with the different

offerings, but they were given to meet their needs. You may have noticed a few new terms attached

to offerings here, like a vow offering and free will offering. These fall under peace offerings.

Though Israelites would offer up peace offerings in three circumstances, to give thanks,

a pompayment of a vow, or at times when someone wanted to celebrate God's provision out of his own

free will. The chapter then talks about clean versus unclean, and various reasons for why someone

should be cut off. For example, if someone is unclean and eats his portion of the peace offering,

he should be cut off. Or if he eats blood, he was to be cut off because that was the Lord's portion.

This can seem really confusing and a bit harsh, but the bottom line is this. God is holy,

and we should take his holiness and are called to be holy as he is holy, seriously.
