Welcome to a year in the Bible with Daily Grace. The Bible tells one big story of redemption,

and we want to spend five minutes every day journeying through the Bible from start to

to start the book of Judges by looking at Judges 1 through 3. Chapter 1 on Judges

accounts the different battles the Israelites had with the people in the land. With God

on their side, Israel is successful in defeating the nations that accompany the Promised Land.

Throughout the chapter, we see the presence of the Lord with a repetition of the phrase,

and the Lord was with them. By these phrases, we learn that it's only because of God that

the Israelites have success. But even with God's help, Israel disregards God's command, take

over all the people in the land. Instead of driving out all of the Canaanites and the

others who are inhabiting the land, the Israelites take them as captives. Israel's blatant

disobedience shows that they do not take the commands of the Lord seriously. In response

to Israel's disobedience, God vows that he will not give them the strength to defeat

their enemies anymore. In rejecting God's commands, the Israelites have rejected the power

they needed to take possession of the land. Now, instead of dwelling in the land as one

nation, the Israelites will have to live the consequences of sharing out with other nations.

Instead of faithful worship to the Lord, the Israelites will have to struggle to worship

him in a land devoted to other gods. Sadly, the Israelites' decision to keep other nations

in their land causes them to turn away from the Lord and two other gods. Instead of following

the God who led them to this land, they completely abandoned him. And just like God said, without
