Rosedale is a suburb that is about six miles from downtown Baltimore, Maryland.

In 1984, the population of Rosedale was about 20,000 people.

In the summer of 1984, 9-year-old Don Hamilton was living in the suburb.

When Don was born, her mother, Tony, nine-year-old Don Hamilton was living in the suburb.

Tony wasn't ready to be a mother, so she gave Don to a friend to raise.

Her friend's only child, a daughter, had been killed in a car accident in 1982. The woman had officially wanted to adopt Don, but Don's father, Thomas, was opposed to the adoption because he wanted to be close to his daughter.

In that summer of 84, Thomas and Don were living with some friends, a married couple with two children of their own.

They lived in a townhouse complex in Rosedale.
