Kristen and I'll be your host through the Book of Amos. So as we start a new book today, let's start by talking for a couple minutes about the

big picture characteristics of the book.

Who wrote it?

What's it about?

When was it written?

As well as some big key themes to look out for?

So the book of Amos was written by a man named, you guessed it, Amos.

And Amos was a prophet of God, but interestingly he was also a shepherd and a fig tree farmer.

And he prophesied sometime between the years of 793 BC and 739 BC. An interesting fact I've actually heard it said

that Amos was one of the most unpopular prophets in Israel's history because he was preaching a message of warning and judgment

during a season when life was going really well for the Israelites.

They were in a season of economic prosperity, but God had given Amos a message.

And this message was one of judgment unless the people returned to the Lord. And so in his vein as we're reading keep an eye out for key

themes like God's judgment, the people's injustice, God's justice, as well as themes like religious hypocrisy and sin.
