Summary
As it's the beginning of 2026, we're talking about how we think about our reading years. What kind of strategies does Jen use? How is Sarah attempting to control the chaos? Which books do we already have on our TBR piles for 2026, and how do we structure our reading year to make ourselves happy and prepare for the podcast? We're also talking about some books by romance novelists who are publishing outside the romance genre this year.
If you want to talk to more people about reading strategies this year, maybe you want to join our Patreon? You get an extra monthly episode from us and access to the incredible readers and brilliant people on the Fated Mates Discord! Support us and learn more at fatedmates.net/patreon.
Our next read along will be Ruby Dixon's Ice Planet Barbarians (you’re welcome). Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, your local indie, libro.fm, or with your monthly subscription to Kindle Unlimited
Notes
- Vaccinations are good, actually. In between recording this episode and when it aired, Caroline Kennedy’s daughter Tatiana Schlossberg, who wrote about her cancer diagnosis in the New Yorker, has sadly died.
- It will shock no one to learn that Jen learned about immunizations from books. In her childhood, the books The Great Brain by John Dennis Fitzgerald. We also recommend Everything is Tuberculosis by John Greene and On Immunity by Eula Biss.
- Amazon is forcing AI tools into the kindle books themselves, and it’s all awful. Use your own brain, we don’t know what else to say.

| 0:00.0 | I had a whole thing I wanted to do, and now I can't remember what it is. Well, welcome to 2026, I guess. And this is a good topic for sort of New Year. I want to talk about New Year, actually, because I always feel like... Should we introduce ourselves first, just like really early, get it out of the way? I mean, we'll throw Eric off and everyone else, but sure, welcome everyone to Fade of Names. I'm Sarah McLean. I read romance novels and I write them. |
| 0:24.1 | And I'm Sarah McLean. I read |
| 0:22.7 | romance novels and I write them. And I'm Jennifer Procop, a romance reader and editor. And it's |
| 0:29.1 | January. And I think here's my question. And I know what your answer is going to be because |
| 0:34.6 | you're still a teacher. But New Year's always feels sort of like a fraud to me because it's really not. Like I appreciate that we all do New Year's |
| 0:42.7 | resolutions. Although I read this like really interesting thing that was like biologically, like the |
| 0:46.8 | winter is actually a terrible time to do resolutions because like your body like, you're animals, right? |
| 0:53.3 | So it's, we're designed to just like shut down to like |

| 1:12.3 | whatever, you do you, everyone. But truly, like, it's that whole new and crisp in the fall thing. |
| 1:20.7 | Yeah. I mean, I, as listen, my entire life is a school teacher. I just feel like, what's, this is not |
| 1:26.7 | anything. This is just the middle of a school year. And this is like a northern hemisphere thing, I think, because although I'm sort of curious, like, I don't, I don't really know how school works anywhere else in the world. So, well, my friend Brittany, I don't know, you got, you know this, the one who did all your TikToks move to Botswana with her family. And I literally, like the other day, she talked about her daughter, Botswana to find it on the map. It is directly north of South Africa. And so it's the southern hemisphere. Correct. And she mentioned being on, like her daughter being on summer break. And I was like, Britney, it is one thing to know that you live on a different continent now. But the fact that you flat up live in a different hemisphere. Yeah, the upside down. My brain just like glitched. I was like, I was like, wait, that's fucking crazy. So like, does they have multiple months off the way we do? I don't know. I have not. I know. It's complicated. We don't know know somebody on the discord is about is already drafting |

| 2:35.5 | So that felt. And she kept going, why are all these kids in school? |
| 2:40.9 | Because it's not summer here. Yeah, right? Which is why she got the flu. So there it is. |
| 2:47.5 | Listen, public service announcement, if you are going to the other hemisphere, to the southern hemisphere in the months of May, June, July, August, September, get your flu shot. |
