This is Karen Hunter and welcome to the hub. I had a great interview this past week with Neil degrass Tyson and he was telling a story which I'm probably going to share in the coming week about not being really good at math when he was growing up and calculus to be exact.

0:28.0

And the story was so compelling. I was sitting there. I was thinking about what it looks like to keep going when you're not really good at something because you have a goal.

0:36.0

And I'm sitting here looking at my page of what will be 300 goals. I'm still stuck at 27 because I don't want to just write frivolous

0:45.8

things down just to get to a number but I want to be really thoughtful about every single

0:50.9

thing that I write on this paper as I make it plain, you know, but I'm also thinking

0:55.8

about how you are supported most often when you're in the midst of doing something.

People tend to jump on

band wagons. That's why they call them bandwagons, right? Because if

1:06.4

something is moving in a direction, folks see it's going somewhere is when they

jump on it. And Chris Rocks shared a story about a time when his car broke down.

couldn't necessarily walk to the next exit or what have you so he's trying to

1:32.0

flag people down and no one would stop. And so he decides to get in his car, put it in neutral, gets out, and starts pushing it. And he said he didn't even get a hundred feet before somebody pulled over to help

1:47.0

him. And the moral to the story is people are more apt to help you do something when you're already in the process of getting it done.

1:57.0

And on a regular basis, I get email from people who want me to help them write their book and I was like, well, how far are you?

2:05.0

Well, I haven't started, I need you to help me.

2:07.0

And I'm like, I can't really, well, first of all, I don't have a bandwidth at a time, so I'm immediately saying no, but if you aren't going through the process of at least making the attempt to do your story or to write your book, write your novel, what have you, having someone come in and help you, and let me just clear the people that I have I'm putting up their books

2:26.4

They already had careers they were already big-time stars or had done something amazing they had already galvanized an

2:36.2

audience so it wasn't something that was started from scratch and it is so hard to

2:41.3

start from scratch so let me just tell you, as somebody that has started
