Summary

#350. Ryan Ellison, friend of the show, returns to talk about his emotional voyage solo across the Atlantic. Aboard POLAR SEAL, Ryan got involved in a migrant rescue at sea and helped save the lives of dozens of migrants as he stood by to mark their position while the helicopter rescue crews did their work. Ryan reflects on the traumatic experience and the life epiphanies that came from the experience, why he stopped in Cape Verde, why he continued solo after almost abandoning the attempt, and what he learned about himself in the process. Andy & Emma co-host today's show with Ryan. --

Good. So we're all recording now. Ryan sounds great. Emma, I'm sure you sound great.

0:06.3

And I know I sound great.

0:10.0

Yes, Andy.

0:12.1

On the Wind is presented by Weems and Plath, our good friends from Annapolis, makers of fine, nautical and weather instruments since 1928.

0:21.4

I have to give a shout out to Williams and Plath.

0:23.6

The deal we made for this episode, or for this season of the podcast,

0:27.2

in lieu of them giving us cash, I got a really cool actual ships chronometer.

0:35.2

It's made by Seiko, but Weems and Plath is one of the distributors,

0:38.9

and this is like a $4,000 clock, and I've got it sitting here on my deck, on my desk,

0:45.7

but it's the real deal, and it's what ships used to use back in the day to do celestial

0:50.8

navigation. And the reason it's so expensive is because it has to be extremely

0:55.1

accurate and also extremely constant. So to do celestial with only a mechanical clock at sea,

1:02.8

you have to know that the clock is going to be the right time or gain or lose the correct

1:07.9

amount of seconds each day. So you can log that and adjust for it in your celestial nav and i just you know i love the history of this stuff and i just thought this was the

1:15.2

coolest thing ever and decided hey weimson plath i'll trade you an ad slot on the show if you

1:20.5

give me that clock and we had a deal at the boat show last year obviously that's not the most

1:25.3

practical item that they sell but it is one of the very, very coolest

1:29.2

items that they sell.

1:30.3

For practicality, I would check out their OGM lights.

1:33.3

They do nav lights that we're putting on all of our boats, that we have on all of our boats,

1:37.1

and that's kind of the modern version of what the best things that they sell.

1:42.0

So check out their LED nav lights, OGM lights,
