Summary
#351. Andy Chase is a professional mariner in every sense of the word. He's worked all over the world on all types of ships - big, small, sailing ships and container ships. Nonfiction writer John McPhee even based his wonderful book 'Looking for a Ship' on Andy's maritime career. Most recently, Andy's been a long-time professor at Maine Maritime Academy and even skippered the schooner BOWDOIN back to the Arctic. I spoke to Andy at length about his career and his thoughts on seamanship, which there are many.

| 0:00.0 | Hey friends, welcome back to On the Wind. I'm your host, Andy Shell, and I've got my two-year-old |
| 0:05.7 | son, Axel, staring at me from across the container here in Mission Control. This is the last |
| 0:11.4 | episode of the current season of On the Wind. That actually doesn't mean much this time, because we're |
| 0:16.9 | coming right back with the new season next week, but we'll have new sponsors on the show and some really exciting new guests on the show next week. The reason we're coming |
| 0:25.0 | back so quickly is that we've done a pretty good job of recording podcasts. Emma, August, and |
| 0:30.2 | myself have a bunch of episodes in the bank that we're very excited to share with you. |
| 0:33.8 | And I'm going to preview next week's episode because it, well, today's episode and next week |
| 0:38.3 | are both all-timers next week more so than today, just because of the name recognition, |
| 0:43.9 | I would say. Emma had the chance to actually meet Robin Lee Graham in person, and that is |
| 0:50.5 | next week's episode, which she is very excited to share with you. I am very jealous that she |
| 0:54.7 | got to go and meet him at his house in Montana without me. If you don't know who Robin Lee Graham is, |
| 1:00.9 | he wrote the book called Dove. Since the book came out, he's kind of gone away from sailing a bit, |
| 1:07.5 | moved to Montana, lives inland in the mountains, and has pretty much disappeared from the sailing culture, and Emma sought him out and made it happen and actually |
| 1:16.3 | went to meet him. And I'm very excited to share that with you guys next week. I'm also super |
| 1:20.8 | excited to share today's episode. This is Andy Chase. He's been on my list since the very |
| 1:25.7 | beginning of the podcast. I'm interrupted by Axel. He's chasing after my list since the very beginning of the podcast. |
| 1:29.5 | I'm interrupted by Axel. |
| 1:31.2 | He's chasing after my Legos. |
| 1:37.2 | I have a Beatles-Legos yellow submarine behind me that he is about to grab and destroy because that's what two-year-olds do. |
| 1:38.9 | Anyway, back to Andy Chase. |
| 1:40.2 | He's been on my list since the very beginning of the podcast. |
| 1:42.5 | He is a professional mariner in the fullest sense of the word, worked on ships, large and small, tall ships. |
