Welcome to The Treatment. I'm Elvis Mitchell. It's always good to see a film that plays with the idea of manipulation and how it gets out of hand for some people.

And my guest's director, Ryan Russell Young, has made two terrific films that deal with that.

Nobody walks through. I think it's kind of an amazing piece of work.

And her new film as director is the adaptation of Before I Fall.

First of all, thanks so much for being here.

Thank you for having me.

But the idea of that kind of psychological power and how it can be basically the person who's using it, the woman who's using it, the young woman does really have any sense for her own power, is a fascinating idea.

We've seen a lot in literature, but not so much in movies.

Yeah. Can I just say one thing?

We just back up for one second.

I just want to say what a fan I am of your show,

and that I, the hearing other directors and actors speak about process is something so valuable

because we don't talk about the creative process enough.

What do you think that is?

I think there's a little bit of a mythology in American society that what we make happens

very quickly and that it doesn't take a ton of hard work to get there.

And I think having done this now for a while, I've had to develop a pretty rigorous process in order to make things of quality.

And so, and part of that, I think it's not talked about as much.

And I feel like your show really brings out the process part and the sort of hard work, then the thinking behind

all the choices that we see on screen that we don't even sometimes know our choices.

It's interesting because I'm just thinking about your two leads, Zoe Deutsch and Olivia Thurlby
