If you steadily lose vote share among a declining but still large demographic like white on college

voters that will easily cancel out all the advantages you have from the changing mix of voters.

Trump is president today because he generated huge shifts

among declining white nine college constituencies.

Listen, I normally start this podcast by telling you some take about the world,

something that struck me in the last few weeks about the nature of populism,

how it's progressing around the world, how we're managing to hopefully beat it

back. Today I want to do something slightly different. I want it to be one of the first people to find out about my next book project.

The working title is The Great Experiment, How to Make Diverse Democracy's Work work and it is arguing what the title implies.

I'm trying to think about why it is so hard to make that transition from mono-ethnic, monocultural, to multi-ethnic democracies.

To make that transition in countries in North America from societies that perhaps have always been diverse but that had a strong racial and religious hierarchy to ones that hopefully are becoming more fair and more egalitarian.

It will be informed by comparative politics, informed by history, a wide-ranging

look at why this is such a hard problem, but just as importantly an optimistic book because I am quite pessimistic sometimes despairing

about the moment to moment changes in our politics about this period of deep populism we are going through and the dangers it poses to our democracy,

I'm often more optimistic about what is going on on the ground.
