Well, I am recording these slightly downcast words quite briefly after the Senate has on a largely

partisan vote acquitted Donald Trump in his impeachment trial. I was fearful from the very beginning that this would be the end of

the trial at a time when there was a lot of optimism that this would play out like the trial of

Richard Nixon in which the more we learned the more people would turn against

Trump I argued all along that this was unlikely to happen.

Richard Nixon was a hypocrite who showed the American people a face of respectability

while actually associating with crooks and swearing in outrageous ways in the Oval Office.

Donald Trump, in that sense at least, is not a hypocrite.

He always showed Americans exactly who they were and some of them seem to like it,
