Summary

Actor Ruth Wilson feels she can’t help but bring the essence of herself to all the characters she plays. She’s learnt that in both her professional and personal life the most rewarding moments come from being the most authentic version of herself.

In this chat with Fearne, Ruth wonders whether embodying so many different characters has helped her be less judgemental of other people and herself in real life, and they both explore how we can learn more about ourselves through our relationships with others.

True Things is out in UK cinemas on April 1st.

Hello, I am Fern Cotton and this is Happy Place. Today I get to chat with incredible actor

0:09.1

Ruth Wilson. Oh, I love Ruth. I mean I think that often I would feel okay, me is not very

0:16.0

interesting. I'm not a very interesting person. Why would anyone want to see me? Like I'm playing

0:20.6

characters so I'm investing in a person of a lived experience that I've never had. And so

0:26.2

I think it's actually about thinking or accepting that you could be interesting to watch. Ruth has played

0:32.1

some extraordinarily complex characters over her career. Mrs. Colter in his dark material, Alice Morgan

0:39.0

in Luther, my husband's favourite and her own grandmother in Mrs. Wilson to name Butterfew. I

0:46.4

wanted to talk to her about making Mrs. Wilson actually because I really wanted to find out about

0:51.0

what went into playing a member of her family. I could only imagine it must have been rewarding,

0:57.2

cathartic on so many levels, but also exhausting as it's such a huge responsibility. So we really do

1:03.4

delve into that. I loved watching Mrs. Wilson. Oh my goodness, I adored it. If you're not familiar with

1:09.4

the wild story by the way, it was set in 1963, Ruth's grandma lost her husband to a sudden heart

1:15.8

attack. He'd been a novelist and former MI6 officer. She then discovered she was not the only

1:23.8

Mrs. Wilson. It's intriguing and wild and all completely true. Now Ruth is starring in new film

1:32.2

True Things, directed by Harry Wurtliffe. She plays Kate who has an impulsive relationship with a

1:38.2

man only known as blonde. That relationship serves as a way for us to explore desire, shame, and denial.

1:47.0

And my goodness, it reminded me of some of my past relationships.
