Summary

In the spring of 1955, a crime of passion unfolded on a quiet London street, capturing the attention of an entire nation. Ruth Ellis, a 28-year-old nightclub hostess, shot and killed her abusive lover David Blakely outside a pub in Hampstead. She fired six shots, then calmly waited for police to arrive. At her trial, Ruth showed no remorse. She admitted to the killing and said she intended to kill him. The jury deliberated for just 14 minutes before finding her guilty of murder. On July 13, 1955, Ruth Ellis became the last woman to be executed in the United Kingdom. But Ruth's story is more than just a murder. It's a story of domestic abuse, desperation, and a legal system that failed to consider the circumstances that drove her to kill. Her execution sparked national outrage and helped fuel the movement to abolish capital punishment in Britain. This episode explores the life, crime, trial, and execution of Ruth Ellis—and the legacy she left behind. New episodes every Tuesday and Thursday! Hey guys, and welcome to the Moms and Mysteries podcast, a true crime podcast featuring myself, Mandy, and my dear friend Melissa.

0:36.8

Hi, Melissa.

0:39.0

Hi, Mandy, How are you?

0:44.8

Do we want the... I see your eyes darting around what you're actually trying to think.

0:49.4

Do we want the fake? I'm great, Melissa. How are you? Or do we want the truth this week?

1:12.3

You give the truth. Bring the truth. Preach. Yeah. So this week just wasn't my favorite week. That's for sure. I did get to go visit my family this past weekend, which it's always really nice. I don't get to see my mom very often, probably only a couple times a year. So it's always nice to get up there and go visit her. And it did happen to work out that it was her birthday the day that I went up to visit. So that was really special. I know she wasn't expecting to see me on her birthday. But unfortunately, the reason that I went is because my grandmother

1:17.4

was not doing very well. And she did unfortunately pass away a couple of days ago. So it has just

1:23.1

been a little bit of a whirlwind of a week just between traveling and then, you know, just everything

1:29.2

that comes with losing a family member. She was 91, so she did live a very long life. She had a

1:35.7

very happy life and I definitely will miss her very much. But I know she is in a better place and I'm so

1:41.2

thankful that I was able to get up there on short notice because I did

1:44.5

have one day of the trip, the very first day that I got there. I went straight to visit her in the

1:49.7

nursing home and she was very lucid that day and recognized me and was able to talk to me a little

1:54.9

bit and by the next morning it was just completely different and it was only a few days after that. So very thankful I got to

2:03.3

go do that. But yeah, maybe not the best week for me. How about you, Melissa? I mean, fine.

2:12.3

I mean, there's not, what am I going to say? Am I going to start complaining now? There's nothing

2:17.0

to complain about. No, I'm good. You know, it's been a week. And we'll talk about this more on our chat episode over on Trian. Yes. Because we'll have a lot to say. Absolutely. All right. So we will just get into the story for this week then. The story might be from 1955, but it really is a tale as old as time. It's the tale of a woman
