Summary

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Rutger Bregman, originally episode 190 from 2018-02-21.

Original writeup below:

An absolutely massive episode covering - as said - some big topics and issues, which are immensely interesting and made a lot easier to understand with Rutger’s able guidance and explanation. His book ‘Utopia For Realists And How We Can Get There’ is available now (published by Bloomsbury), and this should be a good idea of what you can expect - Rutger tackles the issues of universal basic income, strikes, borders, how great art can be achieved by not having basic financial worries, how we need a return to utopian thinking, new ideas beginning at the fringes of society, how the US isn’t the beating heart of the entire world (as the news may have you believe), the ‘circle of bullshit’, and how we are working with “21st Century hardware on 19th Century software” - all of these are expounded on a great deal so this is a good one to really sit and take some time with. There is a kind of ‘Freakanomics’ approach to some of the points, which is fascinating - like the eventual financial cost of one element of one’s life, and the knock-on effects of doing one thing in particular and how it leads to what’s down the road. Just so much to enjoy, and all very positive too - certainly not a world of doom and gloom in this one, no way. Enlighten yourself and enjoy!

Emmo clue, in Mo Clue, in Mo Clue, it's Rewine Time, it's Rewine Time, it's Rewind Time,

you know it, I know it. And this one's felt really appropriate because it's the first time

0:11.8

I sat down and chat with Rukka Bregman. Back in 2018, he had a book out called Utopia for Realists

0:20.7

that went on to be my favourite book of that year.

0:24.3

It's one of my favourite books of all time. Fun fact about this episode, if you're a Taskmaster fan,

0:30.9

if you remember the James Acaster series of Taskmaster, there's a point where he gets someone to dress up as Santa and he says you'd be

0:39.7

amazed how hard it is to find a bearded person last minute in London. James Acaster email or

0:46.9

text me that day to ask me to come and be the Taskmaster Santa for him, but I was on my way

0:53.5

to interview Rooka Bregman, so I said,

0:55.6

I can't. I'm recording what I see as a really important podcast, and I'm really glad I made

1:00.1

that choice. So yeah, there's a fun fact, but also Rooka Bregman's new book this year,

1:06.5

moral ambition, absolutely blew me away. All three of these books came up right at the start of the

1:13.2

year in the Jess Megan episode. So I thought it was a good time to re-release this. Rooka continues to

1:18.3

talk sense in a sea of nonsense. And this was the first time I kind of became exposed to him.

1:24.4

So get your ears round this from February 2018. This is my chat with the intro to the sexual.

1:47.5

You set this or that?

1:47.8

Yeah.

1:53.9

But with a podcast, you don't really take an audio clip or a fragment out of the podcast and say,

1:55.8

oh, well, she said this or that. It kind of allows people to change their mind.

1:58.6

And what I like about podcasts is I've had some with, again, some big names who've said

2:03.3

some controversial stuff.

2:04.6

But because I've not selected to take a little sound bite of that and push it to the media
