This is CBSI in the world. I'm John Batchew with my good colleague, Judy Dempsey, a senior

scholar for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a very, very veteran reporter of all

the hotspots in Europe and the Middle East for many years.

And so therefore, I call upon Judy's deep knowledge of the tangle that we call the Middle East crisis

or the Palestinians.

There are other versions of this, but the ongoing war in Gaza is the latest in clashes since the second war

between what was the aspiration of an Israeli state,

a Jewish state, what was the realization in 1948, and how the Palestinians have continued

to clamor for a return to their roots. At the same time, this has become complicated with the fact that it's been

off and on an excuse for a war, the basis of a war between Egypt and Israel, between Britain,

France. Oh, I lose track of the Suez crisis. And then again, the wars of late 20th century into the 21st that involves states

such as Iran. All of this is a tangle that cannot be easily solved. However, the UN now is not

endorsing but certainly not objecting to what appears to be the recognition of a Palestinian state theoretically.

It does not exist. It cannot exist until there's much more done in order to establish the basis of a state.

But in any event, that is seen as certainly a blow to Israel's efforts to defend itself.
