Yaroslav Troumof of the Wall Street Journal's article helps the next steps, perhaps.

He writes,

President Trump's abrupt and enthusiastic embrace of Russia and its authoritarian leader Vladimir Putin is propelled in part by his strategic

desire to drive a wedge between Moscow and Beijing. Mr. Troufamoff then does history.

Early 1970s. Foreign policy experts have dubbed the attempted maneuver a reverse Nixon. This refers to

events of 1971, 72, in which Richard Nixon running for re-election directed his

National Security Advisor, Mr. Kissinger, to make a secret dash into Beijing to arrange an embassy

for Mr. Nixon to travel in the winter of that 72 to Beijing to sit with Mao, a rapprochement.

Later that year, Mr. Nixon traveled to Moscow to shake hands with Leonid Bresnev and sign the ABM Treaty,

also seen as a gem of foreign policy maneuvering for the election of 72,

which Mr. Nixon won overwhelmingly.

Watergate would follow the next year.

However, a reverse Nixon refers generally to the idea of putting a wedge between Moscow and Beijing.
