My guest today is Jay Tooke, a Canadian-born, award-winning producer, drummer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and mix engineer now based in Muscle Shoals. After a 14-year run in Nashville, Jay developed a reputation for his intuitive and organic approach to production—working with artists like Randy Houser, Cody Johnson, Lindi Ortega, James Otto, and many more. He's produced six #1 singles and multiple top 10s across Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with credits ranging from mixing for Cody Jinks to drumming on albums by The Steel Woods.

We had Jay on the show back on episode RSR311, where we talked about his transition from band life to the control room, mixing in Muscle Shoals, and embracing a less-is-more approach to production. Today, we're catching up on what he's been working on lately at Fame Studios and Noble Steed and digging deeper into his creative process.

I had no idea that Bustl Sholes was even a place. It was like, wait, a bunch of 19-year-old kids from Alabama, Roger Hawkins was 19 on this. Like, what the hell is this? But, you know, the thing is, it's like those pockets and things, you know, like, I'm a big guy. Once I got out of trying to be Danny Carey or Carter Beaufort as a drummer, and I got into like studying what pockets were, like Steve Ferone. Roger Hawkins is one of those ones that I didn't even know I was listening to until I saw the documentary. I remember watching the documentary and then getting to go down and some friends of mine and said, yeah, you can just go by and ask for-and-so, and they'll walk you into the room. And I remember walking into Fame A and getting chills walking in the room, just being like, holy shit, like all this music was done in this room. And that was like my first experience like that where I got to like, you can go up and you just kind of touch it. You know, he'd like, wow, you know. Welcome to Recording Studio Rockstars.
