| 0:00.0 | What's up everyone? Welcome back to the epic gardening podcast. Today we're talking about root maggots on the rampage. How do you wipe out root maggots and lo and behold these things attack bracica's just like basically every other pest on this green earth. |
| 0:17.0 | If you're growing Brassica's like I am, let's say, let's take a moment of silence for ourbrasquez because they just get destroyed by almost every pest in existence. |
| 0:26.4 | Now again, before we do this, we're going to talk about Garden Maker for a second who are the sponsor of the podcast and actually just had a call with them |
| 0:35.0 | yesterday because we're going to work on a custom mix for epic gardening |
| 0:39.3 | listeners which I think is really cool so what I I want to create is a mix that can take basic soil, |
| 0:46.2 | soil that you're using in your yard and turn it into something that you can grow in that season, |
| 0:52.3 | because a lot of the times organic nutrients aren't as |
| 0:54.4 | bioavailable as synthetic nutrients at least not initially and something that you |
| 0:59.4 | can grow in for many years to come and so we're still working on the formulation but you know if you want to |
| 1:04.3 | check out GardenMaker in advance of that just go to GardenMaker.com they have awesome |
| 1:09.5 | signature custom organic fertilizer blends for your garden. Now let's talk about |
| 1:15.2 | root maggots. So what are these things? Well they are basically just the |
| 1:20.8 | larval stage of flies in the Delia genius and they are a frustrating |
| 1:26.2 | pest to deal with and as their name would suggest they will take root in the roots. Now there are a couple different |
| 1:35.2 | varieties that you would want to watch out for. First would be the Delia |
| 1:38.9 | Antiqua or the onion fly or onion maggot. So as you might imagine these will attack things in the |
| 1:44.8 | allium family. They will bore into and devour the interior of let's say your |
| 1:49.8 | leaks or they'll eat holes through your onions, which are devastating because for a root crop, that is the |
| 1:57.2 | crop. |
| 1:58.2 | You don't want that happening to your root crop. |
| 2:00.7 | Not that you would want that happening to the roots of another crop, but especially when you're going to eat the roots, it's even more unappetizing. |
| 2:07.0 | Second one is the Delia Platura or seed corn maggot or bean seed fly. |
