The big idea of the series is, and we're going to start here with this thought, that God has more for you.

0:06.2

God has more for you. We're going to talk today about the importance of the Roman Empire and why the New Testament occurs in the midst of the situation on the earth that it does, the height of the Roman Empire.

0:23.5

You know, you can't really read scripture specifically in the New Testament without bumping into Rome. It's everywhere. I mean, we get to the

0:28.3

Christmas story, and we don't start with shepherds or angels. We start with Caesar Augustus ordering a

0:32.9

decree, and so the movement to Bethlehem, of course, comes because of that. When we look at Jesus' earthly life, we're seeing him perform miracles to centurions,

0:42.6

to red-plumed-helmeted soldiers who are officers in the Roman Empire leading over 100 men.

0:48.1

We see questions about deaths that had taken place in Judea at the hands of Roman soldiers.

0:55.3

We have questions about should we pay taxes, should we give the coins?

And Jesus, of course, holding up literally one of his most famous phrases is,

1:03.2

rend unto Caesar, that which is Caesar's, give unto God, that which is gods,

1:07.7

which is sort of amazing and Yoda of Jesus, as only Jesus can be, because

1:12.2

God made everything. God owns all of us, right? And yet he refused to be trapped by the people

1:18.4

that he did. And then on we could go throughout the New Testament, so much of the intrigue in the

1:25.1

book of Acts, of course, it involves Rome.

1:29.0

And then we can't forget the most perhaps important doctrinal book we have in the New Testament.

1:35.9

A book Paul wrote from the city of Corinth to Christians who were living in Rome.

1:41.5

We know of it today as the book of Romans. The title of this message is Rome,

1:47.0

sweet Rome. That's what we're going to talk about today. Perhaps you've never really given thought to

1:52.4

why did Jesus get born in the midst of the Roman Empire? Perhaps you've never asked that question

1:58.9

because you had very little say so when it came to your birth, right? You did not get to pick when you were born. You did not get

2:05.7

to pick the family you were born into. Some of you say amen, but say it quietly if you're

2:11.4

sitting next to the reason why you would wish you could pick a different joking.
