I have to tell you about the sand lance.

This is the most unusual fish.

How did I become aware of it?

Because my absolute favorite fish is the salmon. Now, it's my favorite fish from two points of view. One is that it is the fish I most enjoy eating over any

other fish. I really do. And the second reason is because I remain constantly,

obsessed is not too strong a word. Fascinating, fascinated and astounded. Yeah, I'll stick with

obsessed about the life cycle of this extraordinary fish, which seems to move comfortably between freshwater and saltwater, starts off its life in freshwater, lives most of its life in salt water, and then in ways we simply

do not understand, oh, I know all the theories, believe me, I've read it all up, but we do not

know how the salmon, the individual salmon, finds its way back to a particular freshwater source. By all accounts, the one in which it was

originally spawned years beforehand. And it fights its way upstream. And this I've actually seen

in the locks that join Lake Union to Puget Sound in Seattle, there's a fish ladder with

glass windows.

And one of the favorite places for us to go with our children was to watch these salmon

fighting their way upstream up these ladders where artificial waterfalls.
