In stressful times, Kate seeks out romantic comedies, using the genre's poor grasp on reality to escape her own. So this week, we have a rom-com deep dive done on a whim, following a fateful viewing of the critically-unacclaimed film Something Borrowed. In this episode, Kate goes through some of her favorite films, trends, themes, and theories as it relates to the art of the so-bad-it's-good romantic comedy. She explains the boundaries of her questionable taste, then meanders through the high points from 1989-2003 before she runs out of time, and discusses favorite romcom tropes (e.g friends to lovers, supernatural occurrences, writes article/places bet), trends (e.g. phrases as movie titles, everything about weddings), actor/actress combos & swaps, sound bites, grand gestures, etc. At one point there’s a snorkel about Kate’s hot takes on Judd Apatow movies and her dependency on Paul Rudd’s soothing demeanor. Later on, Kate walks through a spreadsheet she created in chronological order to make sure she doesn’t miss any highlights, but she only makes it to 2003, so, see you next week? She will post a spreadsheet link here once it’s done for a list you can refer to and/or check on the @bethereinfive @bethereinfivepodcast account for a link. Enjoy!
