Hello and welcome back to the daily poem here on the Close Reeds Podcast Network.

I am David Kern.

Today's poem is called After Apple Picking by Robert Frost, who lived from 1874 to 1963 and was the poet laureate of Vermont at one point, and it was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal

in 1960 for his poetic works.

He received four Pulitzer Prize's first poetry.

This is one of his more famous poems, and it's actually one of my favorite poems to teach.

I'm not exactly sure why, except that it's so full of rich but specific images, complicated, but pleasant language, and deeply earned form, if that makes sense.

There's nothing, the form is playful but complicated at the same time,

well crafted. Like you can tell there's a real craftsmanship behind this poem. Of course, it's the

perfect poem for this time of year, especially here in North Carolina where the apple harvests

in the mountain areas are flourishing right now. And many of us are spending weekends in the orchards.
