Anyone who goes to town meeting knows that the highway department,

its budget and practices, elicits spirited debate.

In Vermont, we drive a lot, and we take roads very personally.

There's a road I take to see my sister in St. Johnsbury. It's a beautiful

road. In fact, it's a road you might see in an article about beautiful Vermont roads. But during

mud season, there's a stretch on this road, about a quarter mile long, that's really hard to describe. It's a great sucking stew. And I almost have to become someone else to get through it. I have to become a person of intense faith to get to the other side of it. I have screamed, wept, I have begged to Jesus while driving this road.
