Summary

One of the most feared surfaces for riders is sand and although some riders probably hold that fear level a little too high, it stems from the level of difficulty that sand presents for most of us. But, riding in sand is second nature to former racer and now instructor, Jimmy Lewis and on this episode he shares important techniques and tips that will help make you a better rider in the sand. Well not long ago I was riding a two-track trail which is mostly flat. It's actually an

0:06.1

abandoned railway line so you can imagine a flat that is but it goes through some beautiful

0:11.5

remote and wild places.

0:13.6

You pass ponds, you ride along rivers,

0:15.8

you cut through forests.

0:17.3

The trestles are still mainly intact.

0:19.2

Every now and then you'll come up to one that isn't

0:21.0

and you'll have to go through a river or a creek and sometimes the

0:25.0

rock has been blasted through to make the track flat. They cut straight through the

0:29.2

rocks so you sort of go through a slot canyon as you're riding along all done you know 100 plus years ago

0:36.8

so although it's relatively flat there it's a lot of fun because it does have

0:40.9

challenging sections usually you'll come across and these come up every now and then.

0:44.8

Like it's not rare, it's sort of you ride straight for a while

0:47.3

and then you hit a challenge and then you hit another challenge.

0:49.2

And you'll find that often there's water crossings where a beaver will make a dam it'll flood it out and you have to go through the water.

0:55.8

Muddy sections which can be quite large at times where the railway bed has degraded to the point where it's just mud and it can be challenging.

1:03.0

But it also has sand sections.

1:05.4

And the sand sections are interesting because it's deep, soft,

1:09.1

heavily grooved by anyone who's written through there before,

1:11.6

went through with an ATV or anything,

1:14.0

it's a lot of sand. You sort of look at it, you think, where does this all come from?

1:18.0

Well, there's something about that sand. Anytime I've ever ridden with anyone else as we ride along I often notice that there's
