| 1:57.2 | Well, it's always fun to talk to you for many reasons. I want to talk to you about current events, impeachment and all that kind of stuff. |
| 2:04.9 | But it's not as though those things are unrelated to the subject of your book. So why don't we at least start by telling my audience. |
| 2:12.9 | What do you mean when you say the case for nationalism, how it made us powerful, united and free. Talk a bit about the difference between nationalism and patriotism and the misunderstanding that we have because of the culture, cultural coverage of it. |
| 2:26.0 | Yeah, so a lot of people lazily think that patriotism is the word for everything good about national loyalty, national feeling. |
| 2:32.8 | Nationalism is everything bad and that's an unsustainable definition. You want to get technical about it. Patriotism, the root of it is the Latin word, potray, same root is patriar, bingo, father, fatherland loyalty to your own, which is an important natural thing. |
| 2:46.6 | Nationalism is more specific. The idea or doctrine that a distinct people united by common culture, common history, very often a common language should govern a distinct territory. |
| 2:57.2 | And that idea, I believe, created the modern world and had a huge role in the creation of modern democracy. |
| 3:04.8 | What do you know, Rich? Let me just say, you know, not only do I agree with you, but where I come to the subject has to do with the Nazis and Hitler. |
