Summary

How did wearing a mask become a polarizing issue? If you’re paying close attention, the arguments against masks might sound familiar: denying the science, cherry-picking data, cries of infringing on personal freedoms. It’s a page out of the Republican establishment’s playbook for weaponizing climate change denial. Back in 2018, Chris spoke with Vox writer David Roberts about the crisis of information cultivated by the current conservative movement and it's a conversation that seems, if possible, more relevant than ever.

There is an emerging polarization in America around the issue of masks.

I'm sure you've seen this.

Now, the good news is that there's actually pretty decent consensus on it.

Some polls have it as high as 75% of people are wearing masks.

And the reason that's good is because based on the evidence we have,

which is accrued over time and now seems quite rock solid,

particularly the experience of other countries, masks are probably the lowest

cost way of significantly reducing transmission of the coronavirus.

There's a lot of other things we can do, you know,

expensive social distancing and working from home and spacing people out

and closing down the economy,

but on a kind of like cost benefit analysis,

like just if you wear a mask outside and if everybody wears a mask
