Before the war even began, South Carolina had a powerful faction of patriots upset by British policies.

Charleston was one of the four cities that were expected to receive tea shipments in 1773.

All four cities did something that prevented the sale of the tea.

Patriots in Charleston impounded the tea and refused to allow it to be sold.

In January 1775, the royal governor, Lord William Campbell, was so annoyed by all the

policies coming out of the Colonial Assembly that he dissolved it and never called it back
