Fort Johnson was first built in the early 1700s to protect Charleston Harbor.

Named after colonial governor, Nathaniel Johnson, it sits on James Island to the south of the harbor.

In 1759, during the Seven Years' War, the British substantially upgraded the fort.

The situation in South Carolina had grown increasingly tense over the course of 1775. The provincial Congress began

appointed governor only in 1774, after serving in Nova Scotia before that, and he only arrived in South

Carolina in June of 1775.

When he got there, Campbell began coordinating with loyalists in the western part of the state,
