This week, episode 364, the New England tour, and North Carolina joins the Union. We recently covered the first session of Congress in 1789, where they did all sorts of things, like recommend the

Bill of Rights for ratification, passed a Judiciary Act to create the court system, created all the

executive departments, and a host of other things to get the country

off to a good start. At the end of September, the members of Congress left New York and went home

for the rest of the year. Washington remained in New York, continuing to work on the establishment

of a whole host of government functions. Once Congress left, though, Washington

began planning to get out of New York himself, at least for a little while. He didn't plan to go home.
